[Excerpts, 1983-1987] [videorecording] / Mary Lucier. [1987?]

This tape contains excerpts from five video works by Lucier, including multi-channel installations and collaborative performance pieces. Ohio at Giverny (1983) is a two-channel, seven-monitor installation described by Lucier as "an investigation of light in landscape and its function as an agent of memory." Structured as a journey from the artist's native Ohio to Claude Monet's gardens in Giverny, France, the piece references both personal and mythic memory through landscape. According to the artist, the three-channel installation Wilderness (1986) is "a reinvestigation of... the American pastoral myth through the lens of a contemporary technology." Contrasting modern industry with wilderness reminiscent of the nineteenth-century Hudson River and Luminist schools of painting, Lucier's video landscapes suggest a dialogue between past and present, mundane and poetic, real and ideal. The two-channel video installation Wintergarden (1984) explores formal parallels between natural and urban landscapes by juxtaposing images of a serene Japanese garden and hard-edged Manhattan architecture. At the same time, Earl Howard's score emphasizes the dichotomy between garden and urban settings by shifting from the ringing of wind chimes to the amplified sounds of city streets. Amphibian (1985) and If I could fly I would fly (1987) are collaborations with choreographer Elizabeth Streb that incorporate video and live dance performance.
